  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from LSP NYC -- Have you ever been in an old house and wondered if "these walls could talk"? : What a delight! In dialogue sometimes serious, sometimes poignant, funny, or even flirty, an Italianate house and an even older portrait hanging within share the secrets they've seen and heard -- and felt. Along with their stories, the two reveal nuggets of American history, architecture lore, classical allusions from the Latin and Greek, and insights into the nature of time and the importance of friendship. A fun read for an adult and a great gift for a young person. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from William Lewis -- Great Read! : Warren Ashworth and Susan Kander have written a wonderful tale of the relationship of a house, Ambleside, and a portrait ( of Mrs. Simon Peale ). These two main characters learn to communicate with each other to give us their observations of the people who live there. How would the things we accumulate during our lives feel about being collected from various sources (furniture stores, flea markets, inheritance, etc. ), and then arranged to suit our fancies? Does an English chair really like being next to the lacquer boxes? Does an antique clock resent having been moved away from the plant stand so that the new mirror can be displayed? The span of history as the background for telling this narrative and the learnedness of language make this novel charming, heart-felt, and provocative. Will Mrs. Peale and Ambleside be able to find their own futures with happiness or only feel the loss of their separation? Thank you for a wonderful read. This will stay with me for a long time. 'Tis a privilege to ponder your story telling. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2021 )
